    to start the bullet. Helped protect the muzzel during this process.

    It is a loose piece of barrel that has dowel pins to perfectly align the bore of the false muzzle to the bore of the rifle. The rifling has been relieved and the bore funneled, in order to compress a patched ball and start it into the rifling without tearing the patch or beating up the ball. It also allows loading a conical bullet to be started straight into the barrel without tipping.
