After shooting a .50 Desert Eagle I set it down and decided it was a great gun for the movies and I would never spend hard earned money on one. I suggest shooting at least 50rnds threw one before you buy one. The recoil is great and the action rely's on the shooters abality to hold the recoil firmly enough to ensure the action cycles or it will jam.

When the Desert Eagle .50AE was introduced, had to have one. If I remember correctly paid $975.00 for it, and also bought one box of ammo, $58.00/20 rounds, which equates to $2.90 per round.Took the small cannon to the range, fired seven rounds, immediately decided this belonged in the movies. The good part was I found a buyer that paid $1025.00 for pistol and ammo. So it did not cost me anything for the memories.[This message has been edited by airborne (edited 02-02-2002).]

I don't know how it stands, ballistically,to the .454 Casull-probably inferior.Probably superior to the .480 Ruger.I know it's very much superior to the .44 Magnum.A lot easier on the wrist to fire than a .454 cowboy revolver, for certain.I've had mine for nearly a year, now,it was love at first sight(and trigger squeeze).I can put 7 rounds in a 6-inch circle at 100 yds.with my DE.50 AE,off-handed.It will turn a 5-gallon bucket full of water into little, teeny shreds of plastic at the same range.Totally impractical, too big,too heavy, and an absolute blast to play with! I'd trust it against any critter in North America.

I have 2 50AE's & a 44 mag Desert Eagle. As far as how it compares to the 454, the 50 has superior energy especially in the longer barreled models. As far as the comments above about being a "movie gun" I couldn't disagree more. I have fired the 454 and the Desert Eagle has far less felt recoil because of its gas cycling system. Many people with small hands do have trouble with it because of the huge grip size. It does require effort to control a round of its power but its not much worse than a hot 44mag round. Excellent as a hunting gun. I have killed 2 deer & a hog with it. One shot each. No need to track'em either. If you are recoil shy, stay away from it but that goes for the 454 as well. I have no experiance with the 480 so can't say there. Good luck what ever your choice ends up being. RGBTW: I forgot to mention. The thing I don't like about them is the 2 stage trigger feel. It would be better to have a much more crisp trigger.[This message has been edited by rg666 (edited 02-02-2002).]

I'm with rg666, The 50AE, especially with a 10" barrel is easy to control. I am not a large handed person and I can manage 2" at 25yds, and that is not shooting it often. If I were to play with it more, the group would probably be 1/2 that. As for the bullets, Natchez has the speer gold dot 325gr hp for $14/box. That's less than $1 per bullet. The Eagle is a well built, controlable hand cannon. I love it!!!!
