Gentlemen,Need to know if 3in bbl will fit and operate on 23/4 receiver(with 23/4 ammo).I would appreciate some wisdom on this.Thanks,Roger

    yes a 3" barrel will fit on a 2 3/4" receiver and will function with 2 3/4" high brass ammo or 3" ammo (rem. doesn't recommend this). target loads might not function properly as the 3" barrel only has one gas port (2 3/4" barrels have two).

    Before you buy a 3" barrel, consider having the forcing cone of your 2 3/4 barrel opened to handle 3" shells. Then you will be able to shoot 3" steel shot (NOT LEAD!!!). This is basicly what Remington has done for their "steel barrel". The lower pressure of steel loads will allow for the use of 3" steel in a 2 3/4 chamber. This can not be done on an 870 2 3/4 due to the extractor position not allowing proper distance to kick the empty hull out when cycled. *(Remington will not authorise modifications made to factory barrels).
