In state transfers

OK, I know this has been discussed a million times, but I want to make sure. As I understand it, barring any strange local law, I can receive a gun through the mail with out the use of an FFL if the seller is within my state. Is that correct? Is this on long guns only or pistols as well? Thanks in advance, guys.-Marcus

As far as the US Mail goes, it is only for rifles and shotguns. Handguns can only be mailed between licensees. As far as other carriers go, it is OK, but it might be hard to convince the carrier.

It's not that simple.First, federal law prohibits you from shipping a gun to someone who is not a RESIDENT of your state. How are you going to prove in a court of law that you knew the recipient is a RESIDENT of your state? A certified copy of a dealer's FFL can be verified online, but a photocopy of a drivers license may not be enough to get you out of trouble.Secondly, state laws on gun transfers vary. Some states require all handgun transfers go through FFLs; you may want to check with your state police or read State Laws and Published Ordinances-Firearms (ATF P5300.5).
