Not too sure what to tell you, J.S.; the Makarov was and is the official military pistol of Russia, formerly the U.S.S.R. For purposes of weapons standardization many of the Soviet satellite countries also produced the Makarov (also China) including the Democratic Republic of Germany (East Germany). They are thought by most to be the best made of the several versions, and were readlily available on the surplus market for quite awhile. When the Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic (West Germany) decided to merge they retained almost all of the existing Federal weapons systems and the East German pistols became surplus. The 9mm Makarov cartridge falls somewhere between the .380 ACP and the 9mm Luger in power. This is a little anemic by Western standards, but seems to work for those using it. The pistols are highly reliable and quite accurate. You've probably got a keeper.

I got an early (no import marks) E German quite awile ago. Although a bit heavy for the size the machining and quality are impressive on mine. I'll give a good 'two thumbs up' for the E German Mak.
