A friend is considering buying an Olympic Arms AR from Wal-Mart. Does anyone have an opinion as to the quality of their rifles?

I just bought a new Olympic Arms with 16inch heavy barrel, a-2 sights and a-2 stock, man is it a shooter! I had an SP-1 car-15 a couple of years ago, and it was really hard to sight off of the collapsable stock. With the fixed stock it's a piece of cake, and it's still a compact rifle. The price of the Olympic Arms was only $640, and that included the tax. I think this gun is a step above the "plinker" that lists for $589.

Recently became interested in purchasing a AR type rifle. Received a catalog from bushmaster that was very helpful in providing information and selling their rifles. I have fired and handled a bushmaster and enjoyed it. A co-worker sugested to me to look into olympic arms. Visited their web-site, but was just wondering how they shoot and reputation for their AR rifles.

I have an Olympic arms AR-15. I put a scope on it and was sighting
it in at a range. At 100 yds I was putting them in a one inch circle
and was very impressed and satisfied with the carbine until I fired
it and it broke apart. In two pieces, it broke where the upper receiver and the barrel meet, behind the retaining ring for the upper
hand guard. Why would that happen? No fast and furious firing. Using
a bench with my arm supporting it. Factory ammo. Has anyone else had
    this happen to them?

    Grizz,

Congrats on the new rifle. I bought an Oly PCR4 a couple of months prior to 9/11. Sales were slow and prices were good!

The PCR4 is the 20" hvy barrel, fixed stock. I had a problem feeding hollow points early on, but fixed that with a little ramp polishing.

I've added a 4x scope and a bipod. Great rifle, it shoots better than I ever will.

    Regards, Brisco

Bought an Olympic PCR CAR15 with SS barrel a few years ago for $725. It was a bargain then. The gun leaves nothing to be desired quality and accuracy wise. Other brand uppers fit perfectly. I would suggest installing a target trigger and a free floating handguard to get best accuracy. I removed the muzzle brake because of the annoying blast.

I'm looking at another Oly model, the "Les Horten" I believe it is called.

It's a flattop receiver, 16" bull barrel, with a short free-float handguard, no front sight. The front gas block has a scope rail milled onto the top so you can attach a front sight, or a laser emitter, or something else. I think it's about $750.

Got an Oly 7.62 upper last week; gonna shoot it this weekend. Thinking I might try it on Texas whitetails this fall......

There seem to be two choices: collect a lot of stars.........or have a life!

Brisco, did you polish the ramp yourself?

I debated buying the PCR-5 when I bought my Bushmaster A3M4. I just received an Olympic PCR-5 for a photoshoot, and I've got to tell you... if I had held that thing... the debate would still be going on. The Oly is a sound piece. The FFL that handles my transfers for the magazines, asked if they could just buy it when I was finished. It's definitely the best "bang for the buck".

    Grizz,

Yes, I did polish the feed ramps myself, using the dreaded Dremill tool. There was a small burr on the edge of one ramp that was causing hollow points to hang-up, as well as gouging FMJ's deeply.

A couple of minutes of very delicate work and they're nicely polished, then a very thorough cleaning to remove the abrasive and metal particles. Don't forget to wear eye protection and have plenty of illumination.

Thanks Brisco, I've done the ramps on my .45's, I wasn't sure about this gun.

Polishing AR15 feed ramps while they are attached to the upper receiver takes the skill of a jeweler to avoid hitting the receiver.
The feed ramps and the web between really need to be polished bright to avoid marking cases and non FMC bullets. I assembled four different uppers for mine and did the ramps when the barrels were out. I can say it's worth taking them apart to do it.
