I am wondering about shooting 357 magnum and 38 special in the chamber of the 357 maximum. With 38's and 357's being 1/10th different and mag and max being 1/10th different... Also the chamber pressure of the three step up at about the same scale to. Just wondering about chamber/throat damage possibilities. Anyone shooting thier maximum with magnum or special brass?

I HAVE THE RUGER BLACKHAWK 357 MAX.I SHOOT 38,357 MAG AND 357 MAX THROUGH MINE ALL THE TIME,NEVER HAD A PROBLEM .THIS IS 1 OF THE REASONS I LOVE THE GUN.I ALSO OWN A SAVAGE 24V IN 357 MAX OVER 20 GA,WHICH I SHOOT ALL THREE OUT OF AS WELL .I TRY NOT TOO SHOOT TOO MUCH 357 MAX OUT OF MY BLACKHAWK AS NOT TOO BURN THE TOPSTRAP.BUT ITS HARD TOO RESIST! THIS IS KINDA MY FAVORITE CALIBER BECAUSE ITS SO UNUSUAL AND HOT!ALWAYS WANTED A LEVER ACTION RIFLE IN 357 MAX BUILT .OH WELL ANOTHER STORY LOL

Thanks for the reply, would you have an idea of how much you shot the savage? I never heard of that combination before in the 24 is it a custom?

The only 357 Max I have is in a Contender and I have seen a degradation of accuracy when going to 357 or 38s. When I inquired from some very knowlegable friends I was told it was probably due to the amount of freebore.

Seemed to make sense to me. Most of my 357 revolvers ARE more accurate with 357 than 38s. Oh well just my 2c worth.

the savage 24 v was only made for a short while ,the best i can find out is under 2000 were produced before the 357 max came too a halt.i
happened too spot this gun at a gun show ,the dealer had it marked 357 mag by mistake, after closer examination i seen it was marked 357 max .needless to say it went home with me ,i never did tell him either lol.the h&r single was also produced in the 357 max for a little while.hopes this helps

Some things I have been told to watch for when shooting sublength calibers in chambers is residue buildup and chamber erosion. Buildup will prevent you from putting the full length cartridge in, but I've never really been told what affect chamber erosion would affect using the full length cartridge. Perhaps case stress?

As I am moon struck with the 357 maxi I wonder why it was so completely dropped. I mean geez louise, it'as about as close as I can get to a do it all caliber (here in mid-missouri). There isn't a single loading for it on the market that I can find. Was it just unpopular? Or was there something more sinister that occured? Thanks for all the input.

THE DOWNFALL OF THE 357 MAX WAS THE PROBLEM RUGER HAD WITH THE BLACKHAWK PISTOL.THE ROUND IS SO HOT THAT IT WAS FLAME CUTTING THE TOP STRAP ON THE BLACKHAWK PISTOL.IT ONLY CUTS IT A FEW THOUSANDS AND THATS ALL,BUT ENOUGH TOO WORRY RUGER SO THEY RECALLED THE PISTOLS AFTER ONLY MANUFACTURING ABOUT 9000 OF THEM.I HAVE BEEN TOLD TOO INSERT A PIECE OF THIN METAL AGAINST THE TOP STRAP WHEN FIRING THE MAX LOADS TOO PROTECT THE GUN.I HAVE HAD GOOD LUCK FINDING AMMO AT THE GUN SHOWS .I HAVE PROBRABLY BOUGHT 300 RDS OR SO .THEN I WILL START RELOADING THE BRASS FROM THERE.DAN WESSON ALSO BUILT A REVOLVER IN 357 MAX NOT SURE IF ITS STILL AVAILABLE OR NOT .THE TC CONTENDER WAS BUILT IN THIS CALIBER ALSO.I ENJOY MINE,HAVE FUN

I will have to back up DD on the quote about it wearing the topstrap on the Ruger Blackhawks. Last I heard they were recalled and converted to .357magnum. The only revolver I've heard that can take the .357maximum for long term use is made by Dan Wesson. Other than that I heard its a popular cartridge for some Thomson Contender shooters.

For the guy with the Ruger Blackhawk in the .357maximum, you have a collectors item on your hands, I'd keep extra good care of her.

Thanks for all the info folks! I am thinking of having my Marlin 1894 357 magnum rechambered to maximum. Looking at one of the trick takedown mods as well. As I can find little info on the net about this caliber (357 maximum) does anyone know of publications that has specific information on the .357 maximum? Also, any good smiths you know of for lever actions would be appreciated.
