Cleaning old camo tape.

I have a couple of shotguns and a couple of deer rifles with that camo tape on them. Been on for a few years. I want to strip it off and keep it off.
When the tape comes off, there is a residue from the glue. How can I safely remore that? Fingernail polish remover comes to mind but don't know how that will react to the bluing.
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Pick a hidden spot first and try Alcohol, WD40, or that Goo Gone stuff and some fine steel wool.

a citrus cleaner will take it right off. So will a high concentrated glass cleaner. They both eat the tape residue and won't harm the blue.

    When in doubt...empty the magazine!!

Its in a red & yellow can-Goof Off. The best and fastest adhesive remover I have ever tried. It has never hurt anything that I have used it on.Try it-you will like it!
If you can't find it then good old Gumout carborator cleaner works to.

A product called Zep Citrus 65 or Zep Big Orange will remove the tape you speak of in dillusion. ZEP co. is usually business oriented but call a local office and they can probably find you a sample to try. A friend of mine uses the Big Orange to remove decals from the sides of Semi-trucks. It may discolor the synthetic stock. They ZEP, have atech services 800 number in Atlanta, Ga. who could probably tell you exactly what to use.

Gumout will work, BUT, BE VERY CAREFUL, it will eat the finish on the stock. I used it in Argentina to clean my guns when I was shooting 1000-1500 rnds per day through each one, (12 ga) and it did clean them well, but I sacrificed the finish on a brand new Benelli Black eagle competion model's stock. That was a $400 stock set. You learn the hard way sometimes. It works, just be careful.

    When in doubt...empty the magazine!!

Mineral spirits (paint thinner) works great for removing most tape residue. It is also very inexpensive.

Try it on the metal parts first. If it works, then use it on the wood. Just don't leave it on the wood, apply and immediately wipe it off. Mineral spirits should not damage most plastics or wood finishes.
