M1A Springfield

My thread closed so I am asking another question of you guys who
know the M1A.
How many shots does it usually take to break in a barrel, and
would that be worth the effort. I've already shot about 40 rounds thru it. The guy I got it from probably didn't shoot more than a box or two.

Looking for less than 1" at 100 yds.
Really want 1/2"

If I can't get it to shoot what I want, what is a good starting bid price for a basically new M1A with match barrel and what would it probably get on auction.

Thanks much.
Eric

It took me over 100 rounds to break in my super match on both barrels. I shot one round and cleaned for the first 25 rounds. Then I would shoot 5 and clean for another 50 or more. I cleaned the heck out of it for many rounds. The thing is to clean the excess steel that is left after cutting the rifling. The break in was faster with the cryo Kriger barrel.

As far as shooting a minute with a standard rifle, most will do it. You have to find which load you rifle likes. Mine likes a stiff M-119 type load with the 175 or 180 grain bullets. That is the hard part, trying different loads and getting one you can build on. You can't just break in a barrel and expect any load you throw in to shoot great. Take your time.

If you find a standard M1A that shoots under 1" please post pics of the target and match.

If the weapon has a chromelined USGI barrel there is not really any break in.
The slow and clean method can't hurt on a chromemoly barrel.

Cper is right on with that one---M1A's are great rifles but when
you talk about 5 shots @100 in less then an inch you have a fine
tuned rifle witheven more fine tuned ammo---I believe that type
of horsepower will run you about 2 grand or more. DW
