Just received an old Colt revolver. Just not
sure which model number it is....
On top of barrel has pat dates 84,88, and 95.
On side of 3" barrel COLT D. A. 41. Serial #161326.
So, it a rare 3" barrel 41Colt, model ?????

Thanks as always,
JBB

A picture is almost necessary to identify one of the dozens of Colt revolver models. However, it sounds like it could be a New Army or New Navy with those patent dates and that serial number. Barrel lengths were 2, 3, 4.5, 5 and 6 inches. I do not know the relative scarcity of the various barrel lengths, but I would speculate the short barrels are less common, with 2" probably being the scarcest.

It appears this is a Model 1901 New Army and Navy Revolver. The S/N indicates mid-year 1901 manufacture. These were made in barrel lengths of 2, 3, 4 1/2, 5, and 6 inch. Calibers were 38 Long and Short Colt, 38 S & W, 41 Long and Short Colt, and 32-20. Unusual barrel lenths were 2 and 5 inch. The 3, 4 1/2, and 6 were standard with the 3 inch less often seen. Hope this helps!
