Questions on Sig 225 and 228

I have a 1999 Sig calendar that list a 225 and a 228 pistol in 9mm caliber. Both say these are law enforcement pistols only. I have heard of law enforcement only magazines, but the entire pistol???
My brand new 2002 Sig catalogue does not even list these guns. And, I was at the range recently and a friend let me shoot his Sig 9mm and he told me it was a 228. What is up with this?
Oh well, I went ahead and ordered a Sig 229, but, sigh, the wait has been three weeks now with no Sig in sight.

The reason why the 228 was dropped from civilian sales was due in part to the 229. The 229 and 228 are the dimensionally the same except for weight(229 is lightly heavier) and the obvious differences in slide configuration. The 229 is designed to handle calibers 9mm, 40s&w, and .357sig. The 228 being lighter can't handle the heavier loads as well as the 229 can. The 229 is merely a more refined 228. Both are extremely accurate and reilable firearms.
The 228 can still be bought by civilians but only as a used gun. The 225 is basically the same way. The 225 now is used more in Europe as a L.E pistol. The 225 is also a fine weapon.
The 225 is made in Germany and the 228 is made here in the U.S. I handle Sig firearms on a daily basis and can tell you that these are pound for pound the best all around pistols on the market.
Happy Shooting!
My gun is prettier than yours, and it's a Glock!
