A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.
A scope should be mounted so that its axis is about 1.4" above the top of the rail. If the scope is mounted lower, you will not be able to get your cheek low enough to look thru it. If the scope has a large objective, you will not be able to mount it much lower than 1.4" because the front of the scope will hit the top handguard.
Solutions:
1) Very high rings. Very expensive unless you buy cheap see_thru hunting rings.
2) Bushmaster MiniRisers YHM-226 $14.95ea. 2 needed, one for each ring. These raise standard rings 1/2"
3) Flat top riser, such as B-SQUARE 15100 $56.95 and standard rings.
Other companies make similar risers. DPMS $79.95
4) A high one piece mount, such as B-SQUARE 15100 $81.95 (has integral rings) The COLT mount is made by B_SQUARE. American Spirit Arms $89.95. Armalite and others.
5) A.R.M.S. #36 or #36 EX Swan sleeve. High quality riser.
6) GG&G Scout Rail. High quality riser. This is the one that I have. It extends 2" beyond the front of the receiver so that a large scope can be mounted far enough forward for safe eye relief.
I recommend that you take as much care in choosing the mounting system as you do in selecting the scope.

Personal shop preferances are: 1. Not use a riser unless you want see thru for open sight usage. If so, the mounting fasteners, and they're alignment are most important.
I try to stay away from risers because they add alignment, and another potential 'fastener seam' weakness, when scope is bumped produces added leverage on lower fasteners, not to mention it can adversely affect elevation adjustments, which can degrade sight picture.
2. High to super high rings are generally capable of allowing most correct mounting og most appropriate scopes.
Just finished a Stoner in .308 with another Night Force 3.5-15X50mm.
3. On AR types, many shooters prefer a tight face/cheek fit. Even use their nose to touch the charging handle as a quick set point. Properly set up the, only reason to get 'scope eye', or nose cut is not holding it properly.
