Colt 38 super whats it worth?

I have a colt 38 super that I have had for over 20 years. I bought just as it was traded in. The gun still looks new with walnut stocks and is satin nickle plated. The left side of the slide has the words "COLT super.38 automatic"and the colt logo. The right side has the words "Colts MFG.CO.HartfordCT.U.S.A.". The serial number is on the right side of the frame above the trigger #807XX. The clip is also nickle with the words"COLT Super.38Auto"on the bottom with a capitol M stamped in the upper right corner. I have taken it to a couple of dealers and they have never seen one nickle plated and said I should write colt to check its history. But I thought I would see if anyone else could help. Thanks

it sounds like a pre-70 series 1911 (wilson's book lists your number as made in 1950) but they were not made in "satin" nickel as far as i know. might be worn really dull or refinished. original older 38 supers will bring a lot of money from collectors or at least the prices demanded by collectors is high. one guy in california deals in these and i see him asking 3,000 to 5,000 bucks for old 38 supers. but these are like 98 percent original finish so i assume a refinished gun would bring a lot less. do the markings looked blurred or polished out at all? your gun if original nickel is probably worth a couple thousand and maybe 500 if refinished. good luck on this one.

    i never make misteakes.

Thanks for the reply Hacker. The finish on the gun looks original to me it's not worn at all,all my friends think it's a new gun and are supprised at the length of time I've had it.All the letters and colt logo are sharp and clean. The finish on the sides of the slide, safety and slide release are satin finished while the top of the slide and the front of the frame are of a matt finish along with the bottom half of the mag. For it to be made in 1950 it has survived in very good condition. Thanks again

moore-- I have collected large bore Colt auto pistols for many years. I have owned around 2 dozen 38 Supers and inspected hundreds more. I have never seen one in the serial number range you mention with a factory nickel finish. However, that's not to say your gun is not a "special order" where someone ordered it from the factory with a nickel finish. For you to sell it and command the big bucks for a rare gun, you will need to contact Colt and get a letter validating the fact that its finish is factory.

I appreciate the info on the gun, I've had it so long I wouldn't think about selling it. Contacting Colt is the best bet to the originality of the finish. Thanks Guys
