Confused about Glocks. Next Gen?

I see people referring to Glock gen 2 or gen 3. I don't even know if there is a gen 4.
Is one better than the other?
Should a lower gen be cheaper than a higer gen?
I am looking at buying a Glock, but don't know enough to make a good decision. Need advice please.

The main difference is in the frame.

The gen 4 is like the gen 3 with changable back straps. BUT you don't want a gen 4 as they are having troubles with it [B)][^]

I also believe with the Gen 4, you can change the magazine release for right to left handed.

Everything on Gens 1,2,and 3 are interchangable except the slide release. All gen 1s were 9mm and there was only the g17 at this time.
The main difference between the 1 and 2 are some checkering on the grip and all gen 1s were made in Austria.
Gen 3s have finger notches and some different checkering and most but not all gen 3s have a rail. From what I have read the gen 3s also have a little tighter chamber. But all the major parts will interchange!
The gen 4 is a whole different story! It has a back strap than can be interchanged to fit the hand size you want. It has a different recoil spring setup, different trigger, different mag release thats reversable for lefties, and in my opinion a different feel!
Just a quick overview! There are also many intergenerational changes.
My favorite glocks are the gen 2s! I shoot one every week in local competitions and before the crazyness started you could pick up a police turn g22 for $300-$350 with two mags. I just sold my Gen 4 g35 for $100 more than I paid for it so good luck right now.

Edit: glocks are not junk! Also I have seen three sigs breakdown in competition just this year. Recoils springs breaking and an extractor breaking. Except for a glock shooter with an aftermarket recoil setup failing I have never seen a glock fail! For the money glocks are the best! Sigs are good guns, I own two, but I carry a glock!

Edit #2 Which caliber were you thinking of getting? On gens 2s & 3s the recoil springs were the same for 9 & 40,, with the 40s having a little heavier slide. I think one of the reasons for the gen 4 was to introduce a stronger recoil spring assembly and a heavier one for the 40s&w cartridge. I shoot alot of 40 and have never had problems with my gen 2s. Theres alot of overblown hype out there about the 40 cal in general and more specific in the glock pistols.
In my opinion you can't go wrong with any of them. But your first glock should be a 9. I have been told by several dealers that the g19 is the best selling glock at the moment. Used ones don't stick around long either!

quote:What I love about my Glock 22 is that I bought "Lone Wolf" 9mm barrel and I can shoot either .40 or 9mm just by switching the barrel. The 9mm works great using the model 22 .40 magazines.

Well if you do this you may have to experiment a little. I did this same thing and found that "light" loads don't always cycle. The g22 slide is heavier. Also I don't like the "Lone Wolf" barrels, they are cheap and I had to fit mine and then I sold it. Just rough and crude compared to the Fire Dragon barrels. Also I ran into feeding problems experimenting with my 40 magaines using 9mm. It was no big deal at the time when you could easly pick up 9mm mags for $10-$15 each.

They seem to have debugged the Gen 4s.
I think the recoil spring change was good for the .40s but unnecessary and maybe a backward step on the 9mms.
The interchangeable backstrap is a case of keeping up with the Joneses, other makers are doing it, so Glock followed up.
The magazine catch is larger which is good if you plan to do a lot of speed reloads... good in competition but how often do you otherwise need to reload in a hurry after 17 shots?

I think Gen 3s are still in production, they are certainly as available as any Panic era gun.

I'd favor a Gen 3 Glock 17. Any other size or caliber would take some thinking.

You can do that with the Gen 3 too. You just need to make sure you have the correct magazines with the slots on both sides.

If you want to customize it a little, I would stay away from the Gen 4 right now. There are not as many options/parts being produced yet. I also don't care for the texture on the grip of them either, but that is my opinion.

I think you could not go wrong with any of the Glock Gen 1, 2 or 3's. As far as Gen 4 goes I don't know one way or another. I have a Gen 2 and love it. It is very accurate, little recoil and has never jammed.

What I love about my Glock 22 is that I bought "Lone Wolf" 9mm barrel and I can shoot either .40 or 9mm just by switching the barrel. The 9mm works great using the model 22 .40 magazines.

There is no finer fighting handgun IMO than a G19, Gen 2...with a few reasonable and easy to perform mods.

I have a pile of them. None are for sale.

This person has not shot a Glock enough to know. I have had several Glock 10mm's and they are among the lightest, highest capacity, most powerful carryable semi-autos available. My 2nd gen was very accurate, my 3rd gen is not quite as accurate but accurate enough for a defensive pistol.
