Not sure why Ruger stopped making them but it may have been that they didn't hold up well under high volumes of 22 mag ammo. As far as accuracy is concerned, I consider mine to be excellent for a semi-auto rimfire. With the right ammo it will stay in 1.5 inches at 100 yards. Only have hands on experience with this one though. They seem to be selling in the $600 to $800 range. . . .when you can find them.

    Hi,

My opinion was the 17HMR was the reason Ruger quit on the 10-22 Magnum. There were plenty of after market barrels being made to convert the 10-22 Magnum to 17HMR. Supposedly, all the 17HMR conversion required was a barrel swap. A heavier mass bolt was not required because the 10-22 Magnum bolt was supposed to be heavy enough to cycle properly unlike the 17MII.

However, it turned out the conversion was not safe and the bolt would sometimes open up under the greater pressure from the 17HMR. This was not a good condition.

I know several of the after market barrel manufacturers quit making their 17HMR barrels for the 10-22 Magnum shortly after learning about premature opening of the bolt under pressure. They realized the issue and quit making the conversion barrels to avoid liability.

I think Ruger realized the same issue and could not control who or what type of 17HMR barrel was on their receiver so to avoid liability, they quit on the 10-22 Magnum.

My 10-22 Magnum is pretty accurate and functions great.

RUGER shut the .22 MAGNUM down to make the .17-HMR.Then they were having pressure problem in the Bolts, so they stoped the line to study the 17-HRM bolt problem, and never restarted.
I was no there, but this is what I got from one of the MAGAZINE reporters.

I purchased one of the first 10/22Mags and had brass extraction problems immediately. It was sent off and Ruger sent me a new one. I pursued this problem and was told Ruger confirmed a lot of the rifles were having the extraction issue. The brass would expand, creating an interference "fit", compounded due to the length of the magnums brass --more surface area, and the extractor wouldn't work. I took the new rifle, sighted in the scope, and put it in the safe, having never shot it again to this day. It's my belief Ruger chose to discontinue the Mag rather than fix the extraction issue.

I beleive that the extraction Issue waw caused by the Duel extractors
So if you take the outside one out and make them like the 22-LR. they seem
    to work ok.

It's just the opposite; the dual extractors were added to fix the single extractor issue. My replacement rifle from Ruger had dual extractors.
