I recently acquired my late brother's old Winny, with hex barrel .It's in fair shape externally, the bore and action areas are in better shape.
Serial no. is in the mid 60 thousand range.

Were these older guns made to shoot with bp,or are they ok for mild loaded cast lead rounds ?

I will try for some pictures today, for bragging if nothing else. LoL
I;m proud and happy that my brother left me this old shooter, and now I want to shoot it.!

It has an Octagon barrel, and yes, it is perfectly fine with mild smokeless cast lead loads. The serial number makes it an 1899 vintage rifle.

Contact Cody Firearms museum and get a letter for the rifle.

just to note; these old .38/55's were made for soft lead and black powder. a modern hard cast .375" dia bullet MAY fall through the barrel without catching the rifleing. slug the bore and try to match the bullet dia. to this (I've seen them as large as .380"). Star line has special (thinner) brass for these old .38/55's.

Yes you can. Factory 38-55 ammo is mild stuff.
