Stevens 25-20 Ammo Issues

I have a Stevens 25-20 Favorite. Bought a new box of Winchester 25-20 shells and the extractor pulls the base right off the cartridge leaving the shell casing stuck in the breech. I dont remembor this happening with Remington rounds. Are the Winchester rounds inferior to the Remingtons.

It could be caused by a rough chamber gripping the case too firmly. Try wrapping some 0000 steel wool around a bore brush that fits firmly in the chamber. Chuck it in to your electric drill and polish the chamber by running it in and out while it is spinning, until the chamber is mirror shiny. That just might solve the extraction problem. [:)]

Surely you aren't firing 25-20 Winchester ammo in a Stevens 25-20 single shot ? I'd call that "head separation".

Have a gunsmith do a chamber cast of the Stevens. Compare the dimensions of the casting to the data give in the "Cartridges of the World", reference manual.

You might not be shooting the correct ammo in it? If so, the person firing it might be in jeopardy, not even considering the potential damage to the Stevens.

    pogybate,

The majority of the Stevens Favorates in 25-20, were chambered for the 25-20 SS, which is quite different than the 25-20 W.C.F. You very well, could have for years, been shooting the incorrect ammunition in it...or, you might have had some old ammunition which was the correct type.

    EDIT 1

I am sure a lot of folks who are not familiar with all of the Stevens models, refer to all of their handy, small, singleshots, as Favorites. I have heard a lot of that.

IIRC.. the 25/20 win is fatter than the 25/20 Stevens. It shouldn't go in the chamber. If you do have a 25/20 win chamber, it may have been rechambered to the winchester shell. Check to see if there is a "Ridge" or rough machining marks in the chamber.

A deluxe model of the Favorite, referred to as the "Ladies Model", was available in a couple of CF calibers (I believe 22-15 and 25-20 Single Shot).

If I had to GUESS at the problem mentioned in the original post, I would say that there is some confusion between the 25-20 Winchester and the 25-20 Single Shot. As others have stated, they are NOT the same, and as the 25-20 SS became obsolete many of those guns were rechambered to the more readily available 25-20 Winchester.

    ADDED INFO.

For those who say the Favorite was not offered in CF calibers, refer to Stevens 1911 catalog, page 34. Listed under "Ammunition" for the Favorite Ladies Model, and at a $2 extra cost, is the 22-15-60 Center Fire. I also believe somewhere in the five volumes of James J. Grant's books on single shots, he mentions the 25-20 in the Favorite.

While 99% of the Favorites were made in 22, 25, and 32 Rimfire, there are a scant few out there in original CF.

Yes, The Favorite model boy's rifles were only rimfire, so I hope it's not a .25 rimfire Favorite converted to centerfire!

It could be done, but I don't think the small action would last long with factory 25-20 ammo.
