Ranger Shotgun

Just picked up a ranger shotgun. 16 gauge pump, almost humpback like a auto 5. I know it's a store brand name, but who made it? What store sold it. and Rough value. There is no address anywhere I seen on the gun. I found the serial## and ranger on the action, and the barrel is just 16 gauge 2 1/2 & 3" (I think). It's also marked proof tested. It's an old gun, not in perfect shape. alot of surface rust so far, haven't spent the time to clean it up yet.

A friend has a shotgun that appears to be a Remington model 11 except that it has the word Ranger on the side of the receiver. Does anyone know if Remington made such a shotgun for a retailer such as Shapleigh Hdw, Western Auto, etc. TIA.

Picked up a side by side at an auction a few months ago and am having a hard time figuring out exactly what it is and how much it is worth. It is a Ranger Precision Grade 104.3 in 12 guage. 90-95% condition. Solid rib, double triggers, 3" chambers, case hardened receiver.non-automatic ejectors.thanks in advance.[This message has been edited by JollyWhiteGiant (edited 12-26-2001).]

Remington did make a "Ranger" branded shotgun early in the 20th century...long before Winchester used the same name on their lower-end models.

Sears or Montgomery Ward. I can't remember which. Stevens, Hunter Arms, Remington, and I suppose others were so branded.

According to my research, the name RANGER was a somewhat common "Trade Brand Name" in the early and middle 1900s (1900 to about 1940). How the name was used determines who used it. If there is a number after the name like 101.23 the gun was made for sale by Sears & Roebuck and by several makers including Stevens Arms & Tool Company, Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works, Harrington & Richardson and Meriden Arms Company. If there are no numbers after the name the gun could have been made by the H.W. Cooey Machine & Arms Company of Canada, Harrington & Richardson, Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works, J. Stevens Arms Company. Meriden Fire Arms Company and Jules Kaufmann & Company (used on ZULU type shotguns) Also would need to know the type of gun, single or double barrel, hammer or hammerless. These latter guns could have been sold by just about anyone.

I assumed those who responded to my question would know the Remington model 11 was a semi-auto shotgun.

I think Riomouse 911 has answered my question. I looked in the brand/name Cross-Over List in the Blue Book and couldn't find it. Due to the features of the shotgun it was either a Remington Model 11 or Savage 720.

I believe it was Remington's first semi-auto..a version of the M-11 (AKA Brownings FN-made Auto-5) but don't count that as gosphel. I read somewhere that they were a Montgomery Wards item.

just to note, Savage made the same shotgun (m-720) and it may be one of those. look inside the back of the receiver, if there is a fiber washer buffer) it is a Rem.

Got to thinking about this one. As best as I can find out in my research, Remington never made any "Trade Brand Name" or "Store Brand Name" shotguns. They may have (and if they did someone is going to let us know about it.). Stevens of course did make clones of the Browning Auto 5 and they did make "Trade Brand Name" and Store Brand Name" shotguns.
