Best scope for short to medium range?

Hi Guys, I hope I am not opening too big a can on worms,but I'm looking for some opinions. I'm shooting short to medium ranges for whitetail (70 to 200 yards) and I'm going to put a whole new whitetail package together.Wondering if there is anything new on the market for scopes or just what is generally the best for that yardage as I haven't bought a scope in years and there are quite afew to choose from. Any help would be great!!!!!Thanks,Perry

    Wow, this question takes you way into the range of personal preference. I tend to buck the trend toward bigger more powerful scopes, and for hunting (not benchresting or varminting) see little reason for anything larger than 6x. this is even for pronghorn or longer open country shots. I have never taken a shot where the 3-9x was dialed higher thans 6x and usually lower. I do like versatility however so I am fond of variable scopes in the 1.5-6x range. Leupold makes a vari-X III in 1.75-6x. Nikon makes a nice one in about the same range as does Burris. If you do most of your shooting in heavy cover under eastern cloudcover, consider one of the Burris scopes with illuminated reticle. Others make them, but Burris seems to me the most usefull design.     he's on about the Burris with the dot too. I LOVE mine!!! it puts meat in the freezer when non-illumes can't. I agree as well, you can shoot very well @ 200 with a 6 or 7x maximum. The advantage of the higher power is for long range shots(350+). At 500yds I would say yes, for 200, lower powers are plenty. I do recommend that if you are hunting the eastern cover, a larger objective lens. Say 44 or 5omm. The Simmons Aetec has a 44mm and comes with an illum. recticle for $175-$190. www.natchezss.com
