So you don't have to use stripper clips?Looks like it wouldn't take much??

Have you tried loading without the stripper clips? I've never used a Carcano but all the bolt action rifles I have used work finejust pushing down one round at a time.Weapons that use an en-bloc clip like the Garand need the clip & semi-autos need it to hold the bolt back.

I think Gruntled is right. I don't use clips in my Arisaka, SMLE or Mosin Nagant. Just push them in one at a time. I think clips were just designed for speed.

Sorry, but without the proprietary strippers, the Carcano, just like the Garand, becomes a single shot rifle. It is not the same system as Mauser,Arisaka, Springfield, and similar rifles where the strippers are simply an AID to loading. In the Carcano, the stripper is an essential part of the feed system.Have fun, be careful!Morty

I suppose the modification could be made; the Germans converted some to fire standard 8mm Mauser ammo with a regular magazine system. I imagine you would have to weld over the hole in the bottom of the magazine, install a standard leaf spring, and some sort of magazine plate to support the cartridges. If you could get one of these off of one of the modified 8mm Carcanos it may install straight into the 6.5 and 7.35 versions and work fine. Otherwise, you need a clip. If you need a clip, email me at endofwork@msn.com. I have one for sale.

The straight pull 95 Steyr also uses this system. It's faster than the Mauser system because you dont have to fumble with stripping rounds into a staggered magazine. You push the whole business into the magazine like the M-1. The clip drops out the bottom at the last shot. Many of these rifles were also converted to 8x57 Mauser by the germans during WW2.

The only quick and safe conversion for any carcano is to take it and an eight pound hammer into the back yard, drive it - barrel first- into the ground, use it to tie the dog to.

Now, now wilmame, don't go frightening people off. Have you ever heard- actually heard- of ANYONE ever having one of these actions fail on them? I haven't. On the other hand I have heard of many Krag bolts failing, yet everyone loves the Krag. If the gun is in good shape, shoot it. You won't have any trouble.
