folks who espouse the differeces and throats and necks and headspace garbage. This is from Tippie. He has fired more 308 and 223 than most of us combined in every combo you can think of.He is the Pro from Dover."TippieStaffRegistered: Apr 2001Posts: 1070 of 1143GA, USA Posted - 12/02/2001 : 08:49:18
Those that use SAAMI as the bible, are still listening to their 8 Track, driving their Biscayne (with the factory tires), and are sure thet their butterflied collar shirts are going to be back in fashon this year.7.62 NATO, and 5.56 NATO vs. .308 Winchester and .223 Remington. Standard vs. Metric.Yes, there are small diferences in the throat dimensions. For the most part you may interchange metric vs. standard ammo. Their are a couple of exceptions, such as 7.62mm machine gun ammo(linked/delinked) that just does not like the slightly smaller chamber/throat of the .308.The same is true of several 5.56 NATO machine gun stuff. The pressures that SAAMI provides are "tuned" for the weakest possible rifles. Sorry to ramble, but, SAAMI just makes me angry.Yes you can shot (most) 7.62 out of a .308Lew"I have fired thousands of 223 with a 75 grain bullet seated INTO the lands and Never had a blown primer.THOUSANDS.cpermd

Some of you know who Tip is.The rest will continue to state the rumors you hear at gunstores, ranges, internet, etc.Let's just say he has fired more rounds in competition than we will in our lives.cpermd

Yep...actually,5.56 NATO is .218",instead of .223",and 7.62 NATO is .299",instead of .308".Most military ammo is loaded a bit hotter than commercial ammo(heavier-duty firearms),and the bullets are seated out farther, because military rifles are throated deeper.SAAMI does that for a reason. All the loading manuals' max loadings are meant to be used in a wide variety of firearms-some folks can't afford $1000 or more for a top-quality gun. They just want everybody to be safe(and avoid lawsuits).
