Hi:I am in the process of building a tactical sniper rifle. I have decided to use a 700 short action. I want to make the rifle in 308. I am willing to buy a used one but I don't know which caliber I should get it in to meet my needs.

Sometimes it is cheaper to buy a used beater gun.I have a couple of 700 SA with the large bolt face and am going to sell one.Pawnshop is your best bet.cpermd@centurytel.net

CPERMD is correct. For some reason an action cost as much or more than the complete rifle.

Also, the companies are becoming increasingly funny about selling just actions. Buy a beater, all you want is the action and after you have your gunsmith "true" the action and "turn" the bolt, you have effectively created a fresh new action anyway. That's what I do. Anybody out there got beaters(700)???Let me know whenever!!!!Ronin, gunshows and estate auctions are good places to look also.

If you want a new action and do not insist on Remington, Howa sells barreled actions fairly reasonably, not free, but not bad compared to slicking and rebarreling a beater.

like they said try the pawn shops. also get your gunsmith to keep his eyes open for you. every now and then they can run across one for a reasonable price. as far as considering another brand, DO NOT. the remington 700 is the very best when it comes to actions. you can do more and get more from a 700 than any other action out there. the fact that more custom rifles and military and swat rifles are remington action rifles should tell you something. also remington has the best factory trigger out there to compliment their actions.
