Gun Care for Rem 870 Matte Finish

I have a Remington 870 12 Ga with the matte finish (rather than blue). There was a bit of rust beginning to show so I lightly tried removing it with oil and 4(OOOO) wool. Also used a bit of vinegar to dissolve it. Now the matte finish seems to have been removed also (rust is gone!). How does one go about repairing this gun so that the matte finish looks nice? Also while hunting with mosquito repellant on my hands it removed some of the varnish(?) on the wood stock. What is the finish on the stock and what is the best way to go about putting on a good finish? Thanks for your help......

i dont know about the matt finish but had the same problem with a new 10/22 stock finish and ended up refinishing the entire stock. used varnish remover, sandpaper, steel wool soaked in warm water ,resanded, stained, resanded, put about ten coats of boiled linseed oil on rubbing in and using 000steel wool after every two coats whew lots of work but stock is beautiful and resists water mosquito dope and about anything else it comes in contact with. carl

Gun will have to be reblued(hot). Any good gunshop should be able to do this at minimum charge.

Look up second skin on the net and call them. They will dip the entire gun in a camo coating. It sticks to everything, looks great, and is chemical etc resistant.
