ok.....just got some cash for christmas....now how to spend it.if finally decided to convert my assult 10/22 into a target 10/22, nothing special...im not going to be doing any competition shooting at all....just for myself...and maybe some ground hog hunting >=)...anyway....i don't want to spend hundreds apon hundreds of dollars. heres my plan....Stock - Houge Overmolded (i want comfort and for it to be light)Barrel - Butler Creek Blued smooth Heavy Barrel (would like carbon fiber but im not willing to spend the extra $)Scope - I have a Simmons 3-9x32 on it right now...that should be good eh?Trigger - i think i may either get a volquartsen trigger/sear/hammer set...but i may get a lesser known set instead.....all i really want is an adjustable trigger and 1-2 lb trigger pull.so...Standard Ruger/BC heavy Barrel/3-9x32mm/Houge Stock......would this be a good starter target rifle for me? what size groups would you expect?....(keep in mind i can hit a quarter at 50 yards about 50% of the time with it the way it is now)...thanks for reading and taking the time to respond!!!Ryan

Other than that scope the plan is good. I would get a little more power and put the 3x9 on the ol' 30/30. You will then have a tack driver that you can see the tacks go in!

Go to www.midwayusa.com and look under scopes, variable power, 6-24X, BSA. They have a mil-dot on sale for $79. I got to go order on myself, RIGHT NOW!

Kadaver,I just completed the same project. Haven't gotten it to the range yet, but will next Saturday. Here's what I did:1. Adams & Benett blued, fluted barrel from Midway: $119.99. Barrel is button rifled and air-gauged with a match dimension chamber.2. Volquartsen target hammer from Brownells: $34.95. Drop in installation, comes with springs. Instant 2.5# pull. No need for a fancy trigger & sear - I have done that route before and the trigger pull is no better than just replacing the hammer. Also added a Volquartsen extended mag release (~$15?).3. Power Custom scope base from Brownells: $14.95. It's a Weaver base that allows you to use std. rings and mount anything from a scope to Red Dot, to ???. Much better than the Ruger tip off mount. Added Weaver 4x4 rings (also Brownells) for $21.99.4. Bell & Carlson thumbhole stock. This is piller bedded, very light and strong (kevlar and fiberglass) and I don't like the rubber feel of the Hogue stock. This did cost a bit more but it's worth it, in my opinion. $140.00 eBay.5. Simmons 6-18x AO scope. I've had really good luck with Simmons and the 6-18x scope lets my old eyes pick out the hits at 100 yards. I had one of these on a Ruger 77/22 and found it to be perfect. Med. height rings work with the scope. $99.99 from SWFA.Total: $450 plus shipping.

Let me add why I chose the Simmons AO scope. The Adjutable Objective allows me to set it for under 50 yards to infinity. Most .22 LR scopes are set for 50 yards with no parallax. Rifle scopes are set for 100 to 250 yards. At my local club, we have a 50 yard plinking range for .22s, a 100 yard rifle range with gongs set from 200 to 450 yards AND we have a 1000 yard range. Believe it or not, I have enjoyed hitting gongs with my 77/22 out to 400 yards. The bullet drop is huge, but with practice, the old 77/22 was accurate enough to hit the gongs 9/10 times. I expect to be able to do the same with this new rifle. It should be more accurate at reasonable distances than my old 77/22, but at 300+ yards, the wind here is too unpredictable and gusty (all the time) to do better than 9/10.If I were shooting only 50 and 100 yards, the BSA 6-24x would most likely be a fine choice.Oh, if you check out the Midway and Brownells web site, you can find several different stocks for sale. I also received a flyer from Houge a few weeks ago, touting all of their new 10/22 accessories theey're now selling. Clark Custom is another outfit that has great custom 10/22 parts and rifles.Have fun with your project!

I bought a Butler Creek stock and barrel combo- barrel is thier version of carbon fiber heavy barrel but very affordable. Very happy with it. Put in power custom hammer and sear kit and got very nice trigger pull. Topped it off with Burris 4-12x compact with AO and target knobs - fine duplex with thier signiture rings. Highly recommended. Whole thing is very nice and very light.
