I found a Win Mod 70 Heavy bbl 243 sn# 817### with a jeweled bolt and Monte Carlo checkered walnut stock. I think the gun is dated 1965. The gun has a Unertl 20X scope on it. It's a sniper or target looking scope with springs, turrets and parrallax adjustment. What should/can I look for in this scope. I couldn't really figure out the eye releif and focus. I could focus on big things, but not small things. The gun is on hold for me until Monday, when I hope to figure out how to operate the scope.Any help is appreciated. Also, what is the scope and gun worth?

In my, opinion Unertl is one of the finest scopes ever made. They have been used for both sniping and target shooting by some of the best. I have bought rifles just to get the Unertl off of them. The objective (front) end is adjustable to allow paralax free viewing at different yardages and does effect focus. Don't know about the value of the gun. The value of the scope depends on which model it is and the diameter of the lens, I have seen 2" programers go for $1000 and higher when in their original box with mounts and spring.

Model can be identified by the # oi knurled rings at the objective. Programer has 2, Varmit has 3.Average retail for a used 20x, fine "+" in good condition is $550-$625. With a dot add $50. 20x is most common. If interested in selling/trading up e-mail jabsao@msn.com.Merry Christmas

Thanks for the replies! Please explain:"Model can be identified by the # oi knurled rings at the objective. Programer has 2, Varmit has 3."The adj obj has adj I think from 50 feet to 200yds. On the dial, it has hash marks from 0-9. The eye relief was really short, I think that was part of my problem. I tried focusing with the eye relief and parrallax, but no luck. The tube of the scope is maybe 20mm? with a maybe 32mm or 40mm obj and fine cross hairs. The rings are aluminum in color with extended external target turret knobs. It is mounted with one ring on the receiver, and one on the barrel on a block about half way down. It has metal threaded dust caps. J. Unertl is on the side of the scope with a 5 digit SN under it. Good blueing and no scratches. I have until 10am Central to decide, then it goes back on the shelf. They won't part the gun or scope out. I like it on the Hvy Bbl 243 that it's on, but I kinda want it for my custom single shot Mauser. You mentioned that the scope goes for around $500, so the gun and scope would be a good deal for about $900?Roy

I got it! I called Dewayne Greiner who has a website and info on these scopes. He helped me out. I was not getting a good focus. What was happening was that we were adjusting the parrallax piece but not moving the collar behind it. There is a locking ring behind the collar that needs to me moved when you adjust the parrallax. We tried it at the shop, it worked, and the gun came home with me. I can't wait to shoot it. I'll post pics as soon as I can.Roy

Sorry for the delay,..holidays.Should read: # of knurled rings. Circular rings with tiny slots/grooves in them.Programer has 3 rings, not two as I wrote. got #'s reversed.Sounds like you are focusing ok. Great, have fun. Good optics.

It's humbling to realize how much of a benchrest shooter I am NOT. I couldn't keep the damn thing still. Paralax, windage, and elavation adjustments all work fine. The trigger is pretty good a crisp. At 100yards I couldn't keep the crosshairs still. (I was not using sandbags) I'll see if I can bag it or put it in a good rest over the weekend and shoot at the 200yd range. Unless I stop breathing, or shoot while I'm sedated or asleep, I might have to go for a lower power or variable scope for what I want to use the gun for.
