Neither gun is a "commemorative"; they are both "special editions". They were not cataloged & marketed by the maker, but instead were ordered by a distributor or organization. It's impossible to do anything more than guess as to their value. A sale - at any price - is dependent upon finding a person who wants that particular gun. They rarely sell for the issue price, and often sell for little more than the standard version of that particular model.

Unfortunately, there is no listing or guide for "special editions". You might try to write to the organization honored by the gun, with the hope that you find an original owner. Or, you may be able to get information from Cherry's Sporting Goods, for many years the most active dealer in commemoratives (if they are still active).

nmyers, thanks again. cherry's no longer will provide values for privately owned guns. neither gun is on cherry's list either. the guns are now owned by the son and brother of the original owners both of whom are retired. i guess the only way to start figuring what they are worth would be to try selling them to cherry's or collectors firearms and see what the offers start at.>bob[This message has been edited by burn1bob (edited 02-06-2002).]

Funny thing. I was just examining my granddads S&W commemorative the other day. He has that same border patrol issue. His is stainless and never been fired. I didn't see it stamped with a model # though. He told me that the short serial # on it was each border patrol officer's call sign over the radio . If that was your fathers or grandfathers I couldn't imagine why you'd want to sell it. My grandpa displays his in the wood box it was issued in on a shelf in his game room and calls it his trophy for suffering in the desert for 30 years and just never had the desire to shoot it. If you do decide to sell it email me at robanderica@msn.com just might be interested in buying my granddad 1 to shoot.
