I am looking at various versions of the M1 and it looks like the M1A has a much better fireing operation but I cannot help but notice the bullistics. I do comparison data to find out the the 30-06 seems to be a better round as it is 200fps faster, 200 ft lbs. more energy, and less drop over distance (.4" less drop at 300 yards). Is 30-06 that much better of a round?

Same bullet weight, more powder. You do the math

They are very comparable. Both rounds were designed for the military for use in 1000 meter battle rifles.

The only drawback I've read (all internet hearsay, so someone else correct me if I'm wrong) about 30-06 is that the powder charge doesn't quite take up the full cartridge, so when fired, there is a small random pocket without powder making for a slightly less even burn, slightly effecting consistency of accuracy from shot to shot. I've heard some people put in some kind of neutral filler so that this pocket doesn't exist. [This message has been edited by ED P (edited 02-03-2002).]

The only difference is the volume capacity behind the bullet for powder, and if you start reloading you can probably overcome any random gas pocket problem with the proper selection of powder. I honestly wouldn't be to conserned with the cartridge but more with the gun you'll be shooting as far as you choice of which one to get. Also if you handload, I'm sure you will be able to get that extra 200fps, but will probably find you won't really need it.

Chris, the short answer to your question is YES, the .30-06 is that much better a round.

I have owned both calibers and my .308 for some reason was far more accurate. That doesn't matter much for shots under 100 yards but when you get out to 200 or more yards it means plenty. I will take accuracy over power any day! I think you find a majority of the .308 shooters have owned a 30-06 but not vise-versa.

CHRIS,WITH LIGHTER BULLETS 150 GR RANGE, NO GREAT DIFFERENCE. 180 GRAIN & ABOVE, '06 ADVANTAGE IS CAPACITY WITH SLOWER BURNING POWDERS.308 BRASS EASIER TO GET (SURPLUS) AS WELL AS FOREIGN STUFF. '06 IF YOU WANT TO SHOOT HEAVIER BULLETS. 308 IF YOU WILL SHOOT LIGHTER LOADS - MORE EFFECIENT- LESS POWDER FOR EQUAL VELOCITY.
