DOES ANY ONE SHOOT THE 7MM STW?

I wanted to know from anyone who has shot the 7mm stw what they thought of it. Does it group well? Did they shoot it with factory ammo or handload? What range? What style gun was it (sendero, or otherwise)? Any info would be helpful.[This message has been edited by Miller (edited 02-01-2002).]

I have a customer that owns several STW's in all the STW calibers. He handloads everything. The rifles are all built with SS barrels. He swears the 7mm will do half inch at 100yds and stay dead on for ever.

I own a 700 STW stainless sendero and love it--I shoot plastic milk jugs at 450-500 yards and hit them everytime. It is a great long range cal. for Deer,Elk or any animal in North America.--Regards Vikrant

Miller--I have been watching your post closely.I am also thinking very seriously of getting a 7stw. I don't know if i should get a sendero or a mdl. 70 win.Sounds like the sendero does o.k. Hopefully someone will give us some more input on this cartridge.

I've never shot a 7mm Shooting Times Western but I have some brass cases of it, and compared them to the size of a 7mm Remington Magnum brass I've got only to come to the conclusion that it looks like the 7mm STW would kick a little harder than the 7mm Rem. Mag...

They do kick harder, more like the wetherby, my brother-in-law has one in browning bolt I beleive. He loves it, and it is very accurate. In my oppinion it is a very good caliber, just not my choice. I believe if you can handle the punishment of this round it will serve you well. Still light for big bear!
The older I get, The better I was!!!

Old Single Shot,This was a reply I got before when I asked the question about the STW. Hope it helps. I have more from other web sites. If you want them I'll post them here as well. MillerSir, I have shot several STW's over the last few years. The first was a rechambered early 700 ADL. We necked down 8mm Mag brass because factory 7STW was not available. We shot this gun quite a lot off the bench and two things impressed me. I could not tell that it kicked much more than a regular 7 Mag. and it seemed to shot almost everything under 1" at 100 yards. That was for 5 shots. The best groups were with bullets in the 140 gr. range.Since that first gun, I have probably shot 8-10 others in this chambering and have only seen one that would not group under 1" for 3 shots at 100 yards. My two favorites now are a Sako TRG-S and a Winchester M70 Classic Stainless Sporter. Both will shoot 3 shots touching at 100 yards with Winchester Supreme 140 gr. Ballistic Silvertips. Average velocities are 3350 to 3400 fps and they shoot so flat it amazes me. I have not hunted elk with one, but they are very deadly on deer and spectacular on coyotes at long range. If you want a long range deer rifle, I do not think you could do any better.

Single shot, Im leaning towards the Win. Model 70. (If I can find one) I've heard good things about it and I want something lighter than the sendero's. I know the sendero's are great shooters but their a little heavier than what I'm looking for. If you find any other info out on the 7mmstw please tell me. Miller

i was looking for a sendero 1st and then a stw but the guys here have since steered me around a bit (now its gonna be a 7rem mag, i think...)due to erosion that might occur to high powder burns...

Miller, I am the one that wrote the post from single shots. I have a almost like new Winchester M70 Classic STW barreled action that was put in a Winchester factory sporter laminated stock (Win-tuff, brown laminate)that has been pillar bedded. These stocks were only made for one production run and are very uncommon. They are the older configuration, not the new David Miller design. They do have a cheek piece and are checkered, swivel studs and rubber butt pad.I have always liked the laminated stocks, but some do not. I have some brass ammo (handloads) and dies for the rifle. I took it on trade from the fellow who got it new from me. It will shot under an inch and has had less than 100 rds thru it. Also comes with Leupold 2-piece scope bases. If you are interested contact me at jmothes@pld.com.
