I have a gent who wants to sell me a Win. low wall [Winder] musket. It has a huge gizmo on the side that runs both a peep sight or telescopic. It is U.S. stamped and has an Army issue padded canvass case. He claims his Dad used it to shoot insulators from telegraph wires in WW1. any info please!

There are at least 3 sub-models of this rifle. There was a very good piece in the American Rifleman in the 50's or 60's concerning this arm. As V35 indicates there is a wide spread of values not only dependent upon condition but upon the specific model. In any case, that sidemount MAY part of the issued rifle, I believe: if so, there would be no rear barrel sight. If that is the case, you have a high-end rare piece (ref: G. Madis' "The winchester Book, pp291-4). If the sale isn't pressing, suggest you investigate a little further.
