I have a friend who recently super glued some unfired primers into the hollow point of some 45's. The ammo is made by aguila iq (i think) and has a huge hollow point. the bullet with out primers is in the 117grn weight range. He thinks the bullets on impact will explode to create a devestating wound chanel. I think it will blow his hand off and break his gun. What do you guys think. Safe or stupid?

This is not a new idea, and there has been some commercial ammo produced and offered for sale in past years using this system. The primers were seated deeply into the hollow point cavaity and sealed over with paint. It was removed from the market after a couple of years as (1) proving to be no more effective than a good hollow point bullet without the primer, and (2) being frowned upon by various law enforcement agencies as meeting the definition of a destructive device. Advise your friend to cease and desist.

There is the chance a primer could detonate during feeding if this is a 45 auto.As far as "DEVASTATING" expansion, he's wasting perfectly good primers. Back when I started reloading I used a Lee hand tool. I had a few primers go off while seating them. While I'm not going to say that was a harmless event. All it did was sting my fingers a bit & hurt my ears. There just isn't that much explosion from a primer. The powder provides the energy, the primer provides the fire to ignite it. But if your friend ever shot anybody with them he'd probably be charged right off the bat. The D.A would say he was planning to kill someone and had made special ammo to do it. The hollowpoints will expand just fine on thier own, they don't need any help. Tell your friend he's watching too many movies.WOODS

In my younger (and more foolish) years, I experimented with primers in hollowpoints of 32 caliber bullets. Even put a few grains of Bullseye under the primers to help with detonation. I learned that exploding bullets can be made, but all it did was blow the lead nose of the bullet off--it didn't help with expansion. Looking back, I realize what a foolish experiment it was. It's a miracle more guys don't hurt themselves than do--the Lord must look after dumb animals and idiots.

Not sure if this has any relation at all but about a decade ago, overseas I had a 22cal air rifle which I used to feed "double action" lead pellets. these pellets were hollow point and had some kind of powder or device epoxied inside the cavity. Some are capped of with lead. after it hits the target, it is quite destructive. A friend tried this on some wild quail and after a few minuites of looking all we found was a partial carcass. Then again, these things are legal on a third world country. I cant seem to understand how a primer would have any effect on a .45 slug. -smooth

You must love Jesus because if you use those things on anybody for any reason, our politically correct "culture" will crucify you. Factory loads that are not extreme in performance "like blowing up" are the best for self protection. Anyhing else and you get prosecuted as a blood thirsty killer who was just looking for an excuse to kill some one, especially if a different race.It doesn't matter that the criminal was happy to kill you for no particular reason. Not worth it.Eric

This was done way back in the 1800's with the 8 bore muzzle loaders. They used to put a rimfire cartridge into the hollow nose of they're bullets.

There were also hollow point moulds for using 22 blanks in smaller rifle calibers like 45.The name Gould I believe is identified with these bullet designs.Exploding bullets were also used in the Civil War. I recall reading one account where a Union infantryman was hit in his cartridge pouch, driving part of it into him. The cartridges kept exploding, giving him a particularly agonizing death. They were not used by that unit after that.

Many moons ago, I remember a friend of mine saying that if you took a hollow point bullet and increased the size of the hollow point. Then put in a drop of water and then inserted a spent primer behind it that the water would compress expanding the bullet. He claimed it worked great ?
