I'm trying to buy a rem. 1187 from a guy who really shouldn't own a gun(more later). I need to come up with a value / offer. It is in good condition except the end of the barrel is blown off. Just like in the cartoons. He apparently was using it for a walking stick prior to a shootout at close range with a unlucky pheasant. He got so excited that he didn't put the safety back on and forgot to take his finger off the trigger. ANYWAYS.. He doesn't hunt much anymore and i need a new gun. Thanks for advice.. Raymond

Sounds like this guy is a candidate for the Darwin award - given to people whose stupidity gets them killed and removed from the gene pool.Without inspection by a gunsmith, you are taking a big chance. The slightest damage to the magazine tube caused by the blowup (or other abuse) could have made the gun dysfunctional, or worse yet, dangerous.I wouldn't offer > $50, even if I could completely strip the receiver and everything appeared OK. And, I would still have it inspected by a gunsmith.Neal

If the barrel burst forward of the forend and it's otherwise in apparently good condition, I'd try and get it for $100 tops. The lockup on this gun takes place between replaceable parts, the barrel and the breechbolt. Inspect both for cracks.Take a look down the barrel and bore and if it's straight and you see no bulges, cut it down to where it's still good (assuming greater than 18") and use the barrel for a brush gun or or cut it to 18 or 20" for a self defense gun. If the mag tube has been dented or bent its a factory job to replace.
