FOID cards

I've seen Foid cards mentioned quite often and was wondering where you get them? Are they something that goes into a federal database? If there is some advantages to having one I'm sure there is a lot of other gun owners that would like to know also.

Here in illinois they are required. They are issued by the state police after a backgound check and most gun shops will help you with the form, take the photo and mail it in for you for 10 or 12 dollars

New Jersey has a firearms I.D. card too. You can not purchase a firearm without it. Heres another one you can not purchase an airgun without it either !!

I wouldn't be wanting such a thing if I was anywhere, but Illinois. Only reason I'd want one there is because you have to have one to buy ammo, handguns, long guns, etc. You have to show it to even touch a gun in a store. You have to keep it current and up to date to even possess a gun in that state. Every time you want to buy a long gun you have to wait and come back 24 hours later to pick it up. To buy a handgun, you have to do the paper work and come back 72 hours later. If you are a law abiding citizen and own guns in the state with out a FOID, you will be in violation of the law. If you have a FOID now and buy a single gun, you'll have to keep renewing the FOID every time it is up for renewal or you won't be allowed to keep your gun. The state gov't keeps records of all your purchases and have been know to come to peoples homes and confiscate their guns. I wouldn't wish for a FOID if I were you. Then again I wouldn't live in that state, for solely that reason. I have nothing against those of you that live there, I just think the state is too * about their gun sales. If you have a Firearms Owners ID you shouldn't have to wait three days to get another one, thats BS. In my state, if you have your valid permit, (which is only good for a year at a time for as many guns as you'd care to buy), you can go in, fill out the yellow sheet, show them your Driver's License and Permit, pay for the gun, and you are headed to the range with it. Also you don't need a current permit to own a gun, buy ammo, or have to wait 1-3 days every time you want to buy a gun. Additionally there is no registration of firearms in my state. The gov't doesn't have a running list of what I own, not to say that they couldn't go out and collect the data from the different places that I have bought them from, but they can't just press a button and print it out without some leg work. Again, no offense to those of you that live in Illinios. Its just that your state's gun laws are too restrictive and invasive for my tastes. If you do live there, by all means follow the law so you can own guns legally, but don't be surprised if some one tries to come and take them away some day. I know people who have moved to IL for their jobs and left their guns with a friend out of state, just so they don't have to deal with all the BS. They do still have visitation rights with their guns on weekends however.

Yes , the foid cards do have a few points , good & bad , I grew up there (in Ill.)and hada "shop" there for twenty-two (22) years , Where did you guys get this "show a foid" just to see a gun at ??? I nver heard of such * !!! sounds like the commy chicagotype b.s. to me...down in southern illinois, the only time you "showed the foid" was whenpurchasing a firearm , almost nobody asked for one for ammo ....but that wonder "will never have a carry permit" state and its b.s.is one of the reasons I do not live there any-more !!! but by the way , I still hold a valid FOID card...just for kicks........

MR az, This wonderful state started asking the show and tell question about 6 yrs ago, what is worse is if you are a Il resident and you buy in Wi, most shops up there are asking to see your foid. I live in the northern tip of the state, and like anything else after the sales people get to know you, they dont ask to see it.

I live on the IL border in KY. Went up there two weeks ago to pick up a gun I bought at auction. The dealer asked to see my FOID card and about had a heart attack when I said I didn't have one. After I told him I wasn't a "native" and lived in KY, he was cool. Got my gun on the spot.
