10/22 Jams

The same day i was having problems with my glock, i was firing my 10/22, and it jammed like you wouldn't believe. Every first round fired had problems ejecting. After firing the first shot the shell would eject out of the chamber, but not the reciever. I checked the breech and each time the empty casing would be lodged sideways infront of the bolt and above the partially inserted next round. I have never had a problem like this before, and I've fired 2k round before flawlessly. I was using Federal High Velocity FMJ rounds. I only use factory ruger mags. Any help?

Had the same problem with my 10/22. I was using federal. When I used something different I had no more problems. I suggest you try that. I know lots of people that have had problems with federal bullets. I will not own them again.

I had completely broken the gun down before shooting and cleaned it. I'm not sure if is is the federal or not, because I have used it before with this gun and had no problems whatsoever.

When you said every first round caused jams, it sounds like it's magazine related. Do you have another mag?

Yeah, i thought tht was it too, but both are factory Ruger mags. Unfortuntely it happened with both my new mag and my tried and true. It's just that it almost always happened on my first round (conincidence maybe) and maybe the 2nd or 3rd folowing round. That came out to about 3 jams a mag.

I do clean my magazines, although my old on was a bit dusty. However, the new one was fresh out of the box.

If you are not sure of the ammo this could be the problem. Some 22 ammo is better suited for handgun rather than rifle use. RG

I have two important bits of info....First, it has been a while since I last fired it, and I noticed it was a bit dry inside. Obviously not enough lube. Second, one of my barrel screws was a bit loose. The other was tight, but one was loose enough to unscrew by hand. Last and perhaps most important, I fed a snap cap into it and ejected it slowly to watch it's function. I noticed that the little shell ejector (that loose piece attached to the trigger group) did not come in comtact with the shell at all. In fact, it was the magazine that hit the shell and ejected it. Is this normal?
