I have recently seen a few adds for a magwell cut and convered on the HK sl8 rifle to allow it to accept M16/Ar15 Mags. The sellers of this conversion are saying that it is legal. Is this true??? Can I buy an sl8 and convert the mag well to accept Hi caps legally? If so how is this legally possible? And finally where are the kits commonly sold....? Thanx guys

I'm sure that its legal. I've seen alot of various conversions for certain carbines, some factory, some not. Lone Wolf does conversions to Ruger carbines and Marlin carbines to accept Glock magazines. I've also heard of some place that does conversions to the HK USC carbine to accept M3 Grease Gun magazines.

I would however make sure the company that does the conversions is a reputable dealer, and also make sure to ask them things like whether or not the magazine retainer is metal or plastic, cause if its plastic and you start using metal GI magazines it could tare it up.

I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.

Special Weapons LLC makes a conversion kit. If you get one of theirs I would expect it to be of very high quality.

It is legal because of the U.S. made parts that go in the foreign made rifle. You can only order the kit from Top Notch. Do a search at hk-54.com in the message boards for Top Notch. You will come up with a phone number and/or address (no web site). Top Notch also advertises regularly in Shot Gun News. Special Weapons is also working on a stock conversion (to be ready in the near future as well as a polymer mag well, the current magwell conversion is aluminum). Special Weapons will install the magwell conversion (you buy it from Top Notch) and re-color your SL-8 black. Look around at hk-54.com, there should be plenty of answers to all your questions.

Yes it's legal to convert but I wouldn't be surprised in one or two of the 'authoritarian' states it might be illegal. Special Weapons site usually sells directly only when a product is first released. You have to be on their mailing list. Otherwise I'd recommend checking out a company called Top Notch Accessories. They advertise in shotgun news and seem to have pretty good prices on HK accessories. But I've never dealt with them and their ads don't specifiy if it's wholesale or retail.
