the help I have gotten so far from discussion has been great. But I am still trying to learn more so please excuse the hundreds of new topics i host. (Im about to purchase and I want to do it right!) My question is.. what's the difference between the colt series 70 and series 80? and is one of these the 1911A1 and one is the 199A1? whats the difference between these two? And last but not least this new MarkIV 1911A1 from colt.. can anybody tell me about it. I'd like to hear some pro's and con's from the pro's please
Thanks again

Series 70 pistols have no firing pin safety. The Colt series 80 pistols were manufactured with a small sping loaded button on the inside of the slide. Pulling the trigger would activate a cam that would depress this button and allow free movement of the firing pin. If the trigger is not pulled and the button not depressed, the firing pin is prevented from moving forward and stiking the primer of a chambered round. Some people like the 80 series and some prefer the 70 series. I have a couple 80 series pistols and am very happy with them. The 1991A1 series of pistols are a little less expensive than the finer finished Colts. They do have the firning pin safety. The MkIV pistols are higher priced because they are finished nicer, polished blue as opposed to matte blue, polished stainless as opposed to matte stainless. There are other minor cosmetic differences, but a 1991-A-1 is a nice pistol for home defense, or concealed carry.

I remember reading an article in Survival magazine on a gunsmith that does some modifications to the lever in the firingpin safety mechanism to make it activate faster. Looked pretty interesting, I'll see if I can find it again.

I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.
