Savage Model 170 Rifle

I could use some input.

Savage used to make a pump action rifle (Model 170) in .30-.30 Winchester.

Could this same pump action be rechambered for .45-70?

Would the bolt face of the model 170 be able to accept this slightly larger case rim? (.516" rim for .30-30; .618" for .45-70)

Is the model 170's magazine large enough to hold .45-70 cartridges?

Does anyone know of a Model 170 for sale so that I may be able to answer some of my own questions?

Many THANKS to Pit-Sitter for shedding light on the Savage Model 170 as an answer to a pump action rifle for .45-70 caliber.

I'VE BEEN WATCHING THIS QUESTION SINCE IT STARTED AND THOUGHT OF THE SAV.170 AS WELL. I HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE WITH THE SAV. 170 AND I DON'T THINK IT WILL WORK. THESE WERE MGF. IN .30/30 AND .35 REM. ON WHAT IS A .410 PUMP SHOTGUN ACTION. THE MAG. TUBE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED WITH A LARGER ONE (NOT TO MUCH OF A PROBLEM). BUT THE HARDEST PART WOULD BE THE BOLT FACE AND THE WAY THE RIFLE HANDLES RECOIL. PART OF THE .45/70 HEAD WOULD NOT BE SUPPORTED (MAJOR PROBLEM) AS WELL AS MAKING THE EXTRACTORS WORK. ALSO KEEPING THE STOCK FROM SPLITTING OR THE STOCK BOLT FROM BREAKING THE TRIGGER GUARD (CAST POT METAL). THE BEST PUMP RIFLE FOR THIS TYPE CONVERSION I CAN WOULD BE A BROWNING PUMP RIFLE IN A MAG. CAL. REBARRELED TO .450 MARLIN.

I would agree, I own two of these guns. Although fairly good shooter, they are of poor quality. The actions are fairly cheaply made and do not cycle reliably. they also come in a rifle and carbine.

    Many Thanks for your input.

I may pursue the idea of milling the case rim on the .45-70 to fit the bolt head of a Remington 7600. If that part can be accomplished, then I can look at the costs of a new barrel for the .45-70 cartridge and fitted to the 7600 action.

I will be checking to see if a clip magazine of the 7600 will accept a .45-70 round.

I have found a Remington 7600 pump chambered for .35 Remington. The case rim for the .35 Remington measures .460" compared to the .45-70's .608" rim. The case rim of the .30-06 measures .473". The question of a clip magazine accepting a rimmed case has been answered.

At this point, can you forsee anything that I'm over looking?
