Marlin 17

I know there has been much debate over the staying power of the Hornady 17 round, but what I want to know is how does the Marlin 17VS shoot. I cannot even find a single person around here that has purchased or even seen one, except on the net. My local gun store owner tells me that they are going for more than retail because they're in such demand. Anyone have one and care to share some wisdom? My husband has a remington 17, which is very nice, and a darn good varmint killer, but the Marlin seems a bit more affordable.

The Hornady 17 HMR is in very high demand or at least around here. It is advertised as being effective on small varmits out to 200 yrds. Mine begans rapidly to loose accuracy after 100 yrds. Hornady is currently the only ammo maker for this round, and I have always found Hornady very reputable. IT is my belief that the bullet is to light to shoot past 100yrds,as you know the bullets are polymer tiped. This may be why it is unstable past 100yrds. Im not sure but I believe it is here to stay. As for the Marlin they are very good guns,It should be a shooter.

    Good Luck.

I had a Marlin .17V now for about a month. It shoots just a hair over .5" at 100 yds off a bench and bag. I've taken two woodchucks - both one shot, one at 70 yds and one at 85 yds - also a few blackbirds (BIG PUFF!!) Paid $260.00 for gun with scope rings and a box of shells (so-so price). The .17 Remington is a center fire- approximately $550.00 for a BDL, were the .17HMR is a rim fire, that may be why you see a price differance. Cooper, Ruger, Anschutz, Marlin, NEF are produceing guns for the .17HMR. I expect more will start. The shells are going for $11.50 up here in MI. I'll keep my .17, fun, modest noise, shoots good, and more auccurate then my .22mag. The only draw-back is I didn't like the long clip, so I shortened the clip so it is flush with the bottom of the stock. It now shoots four rounds instead of seven. Looks a lot better and carry/balance great!
    Hope this helps
