2-9/16" vs 2-3/4" shells

I have a 1939 model Browning Sweet 16. The barrel is marked "2-9/16" shells".
1.(Dumb Question) I cannot shoot 2-3/4" shells with this, right?
2. Are 2-9/16" shells still made or available?
3. Can the gun be reworked to handle 2-3/4" shells? Any idea how expensive this would be?
Thanks for any and all help. Mark
