Gun Cleaning Trick

I was talking to a gunsmith and he told me a neat trick. I thought that copper build up was causing my 06 to loose its precession. He said to run a wet patch of Hoppies bore cleaner through the barrel and let it sit for 24 hours. Then run a dry patch through the barrel and see if it is green. If so you still have copper in the barrel. This really worked good for me. I know we have beaten this horse to death but does anybody else know any tricks?

Sweets or Butch's works the best for getting the copper out, at least it is the easiest to use. I have been using Sweets since it first came out and if the patch is blue each time, then there is still copper in the barrel. No need to leave it over night, in probably the worst case you may have to clean it for a couple hours.
Caution tho if using on SS barrel, do not leave a strong ammnonia solvent in these barrels for more than fifteen minutes at a time. Also I have seen reports where they advise against putting another cleaner in the barrel if Sweet's or Butch's is being used at the time, to avoid a chemical reaction. Just patch the bore really dry before changing solvents.
Usually two brushings with the shooters choice inside will get all my copper out. However, I don't think I have fired any of my bolt guns more than 20-40 times without a copper remover cleaning. Some say that's too much brushing, but I am particular about my rifling.
When in doubt...empty the magazine!!
