No specific markings, generally determined by the type of barrel steel and amount/type of engraving. The Grade 1 was standard with "decarbonized steel" barrels and no engraving. The Grade 2 had "Fine Twist" barrels, no engraving. Grade 3, Damascus barrels and basic coverage engraving. Grade 4, Damascus with moderate coverage engraving and fancy stock. Grade 5, Damascus with tighter scroll engraving and extra-fancy walnut. Grade 6, tighter Damascus pattern, fancier stock, full coverage engraving. Grade 7 was true exhibition quality throughout.

My 12 gauge has figured, English walnut wood, no engraving and I believe three blade damascus barrels.
I saw a 10 gauge 1889 today that had very plain fine grained American walnut wood, no engraving and had twist barrels. It was clearly a step down from mine. The seller believes he has a grade three.
I was surprised to see a Remington with twist barrels, believing they were only found on very cheap brand-X guns.
