What is the best way to date a bushmaster lower to see if it is a pre-ban or post ban?

    Unger 51,000 is preban
    Over that some are still preban and you can call Bushmaster and they will tell you.

    ar15.com has manufacturer links and a link that covers serial number
    ranges on all manufactures. It saved my * once.

    That was an opinion letter and is NOT law.
    People sure are walking on eggs about it.
    Kind of like the way the BATF had to rescind the dated M16 mag law.
    Who knows what the date code stands for so they can't be used in court.Only if they have the "Restrcted Military/Govt/Law Enforcement/Export Use Only" are they preban.
    BATF has not publicized that much.
