What Type Cleaning Rods & Chemicals Do You Use

Just bought a 22-250 was wondering what type of rods you use to clean the barrel with. Are the Full lenght stainless steel any good ? or will they harm the barrel ? how about the graphite one piece
also what type of bore cleaner is the best ? Or what would a good gun cleaning kit be ?

NEVER use a stainless steel rod for cleaning. You must use something of softer material than the barrel. Most people use coated rods, of the Dewey or Bore Tech design, if they are serious about a quality rod. These rods are incredibly nice, I have a Bore Tech. They are a bit pricey, but worth it. Bore Tech rods will accept all the run of the mill cleaning brushes and jags that you can get from WalMart or gun shows. I use Butch's Bore Shine for cleaning, but its not something you HAVE to use, it just works so well on really nasty barrels, that I use it on everything.

I use a Dewey spring steel, coated rod and Butch's Bore Shine. Every now and then, say every 200 rounds, I use J&B or USP Bore paste to got a real good cleaning. I run everything one way except the paste which I run vigorously back and forth for about 50-75 strokes counting each push or pull as one stroke. Everyone says go one way but I only do that for the brushes and the punch. I also use a bore guide as I hope that only my reloads will be causing neck erosion, not my cleaning rod. Overkill? Maybe, but they're my guns and it's my opinion that what I am doing is working for me. Hope this helps.

I use Bore Tech rods and Butch's as well. I did not know what a difference a really good rod could make in cleaning until I got them. I was always unsrewing jags even though the (cheap) old aluminum rods did turn. The Bore Techs have ball bearings and cleaning is almost effortless. I stick a movie in the DVD player and shine the afernoon away. I have always kind of enjoyed cleaning the rifles, and with the Bore Tech rods and Butch's it is a real pleasure. I also use one of Bore Tech's Bore Hogs. It is kind of a gimmick, but pretty slick. You screw an empty water bottle like we all drink from these days, in to the Bore Hog which slips over the muzzle. When the jag exits the bore the patch is slipped off into the bottle. When finished, toss the bottle. No muss, no fuss, no patches falling all over. Really a slick little gadget!

I also use a Bore Tech case for storing the rods. Works great even though, like the rods, it is spendy. I have it fastened to the beams of a storage loft in the garage, so it is accessable but out of the way. I do wish one of the storage tubes in it was large enough to hold the shotgun rod though.

I have found Midway USA rods and cleaning supplies to be as good as any, and far superior to most you might want to give them a try.

    Good Luck.

I've been using the same rods that came with my first colt AR-15's cleaning kit from way back when. I just keep buying new brushes.

I buy the big bags of cleaning patches. I use alot of Q-tips too. I bought the big spray bottle of MPro-7 cleaner. I use Break=Free CLP instead of normal gun oil for coating external, because it really eats up the surface rust really good, and some steel wool helps. I use MPro-7 Ultra-lube for friction bearing surfaces. I use Hoppes benchrest copper solvent, and hoppes lead solvent for cleaning copper and lead out of my bores. And I go thru alot of paper towels.

I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.
