BOUGHT A CHEAP HIGH STANDARD SENTINEL DELUXE REVOLVER. ON DOUBLE ACTION MODE, IT ONLY TURNS CYLINDER WITHOUT COCKING HAMMER BACK WHEN PULLING TRIGGER. SINGLE ACTION MODE SEEMS OKAY AND RELEASES WHEN TRIGGER IS PULLED. I NEVER HAD A SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER BEFORE SO I MAY BE ASKING A DUMB QUESTION IF THIS GUN IS A SINGLE ACTION ONLY GUN. IT'S JUST THAT I HAD ANOTHER HIGH STANDARD SENTINEL BEFORE THAT WAS DOUBLE ACTION AND THOUGHT ALL OF THE SENTINELS WERE DOUBLE ACTION. HEY JUDGE, DID I BUY A JUNK OR DID IT COME IN SINGLE ACTION ONLY AT ONE TIME? THANKS, GD

NEVER MIND, IT'S A DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER. I WAS MESSING WITH IT A LITTLE AND SUDDENLY, IT STARTED TO PULL BACK WITH DOUBLE ACTION. I'VE DRIED FIRED IT WITH SPENT CASES A FEW HUNDRED TIMES ALREADY AND IT SEEMS TO WORK FINE NOW. NEVER TOOK THESE GUYS APART BEFORE SO NOT SURE IF I UN-FROZE A SPRING OR SOMETHING. THE GUN LOOKS NEW ON OUTSIDE AND LOOKS LIKE IT WAS SHOT VERY LITTLE WITH NO SCRATCHES AND 99%+ BLUEING ON STEEL AND 99%+ FINISH ON ALUMINUM FRAME WHICH LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT OLD MAN WHO I BOUGHT IT FROM TOOK REAL GOOD CARE OF IT. CAN SOMEONE ENLIGHTEN ME ON WHY IT WAS NOT PULLING BACK HAMMER EARLIER ON DOUBLE ACTION? THANKS, GD

I would guess the hammer pawl was stuck back so the trigger did not engage it. Dried lube could easily cause this.

The trigger pushes on the pawl to raise the hammer in double action mode. In single action mode, you pull the hammer back manually, and the trigger engages the hammer notch, allowing the hammer to be held back until the trigger is pulled.

I always give any new (to me) gun a thorough cleaning before I use it. That usually includes disassembling it. That is a bit tricky with the Sentinel, but can be done. If you do not want to disassemble it, spray some solvent into the action and work it while flushing it out. Then finish by putting some good lubricant in the mechanism.

I love these old Sentinels. Is yours by chance a Model R-100 3-inch?

    THANKS JUDGE,

IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM NOW. I JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF SOMETHING MAY HAVE BEEN BROKEN INSIDE THAT MAKES IT WORK SPORADICALLY, BUT SINCE I GOT IT TO PULL BACK WITH TRIGGER, NOTHING ELSE SEEMS TO BE WRONG.
IT'S STAMPED "SENTINEL DELUXE" ON ONE SIDE OF BARREL AND HIGH STANDARD, HAMDEN, CONN. ON THE OTHER SIDE. IT'S NOT MARKED ANYWHERE WITH AN "R" DESIGNATION. IT'S A 6" BARREL WITH SERIAL #2356***. THE OTHERS I HAVE/HAD IS STAMPED R-100 (5") AND R-107 (4"), SO NOT SURE WHY THIS WAS NOT MARKED AT ALL. IN FACT, THE OTHER THING THAT'S MISSING IS THE STAMPED OR BRASS ROUND EMBLEM ON LEFT SIDE OF FRAME. THERE IS NOTHING THERE. MAYBE IT WAS ONE OF THE LAST ONES THAT WAS MADE DUE TO HIGH SERIAL #?. MY R-100 ONLY HAS 5 DIGITS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT A SENTINEL WAS GIVEN AN "R-10?".

ANYWAY, I PLAN ON JUST SHOOTING THIS BECAUSE OF THE LONGER BARREL, UNLESS YOU TELL ME IT'S SOME KIND OF VARIANT OF SOME SORT, WHICH I DOUBT. IT REALLY IS A BEAUTY AND LOOKS NEW. OVERALL I THINK IT WOULD RATE AT 99%. ONLY (MAJOR) THING MISSING IS THE BOX. FOR A MINUTE, I THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE SINGLE ACTION SENTINEL.

    THANKS, GD

The last of the "R-numbered" Sentinels ended in 1971. Your revolver was made in 1972. It sounds like you have a nice older Sentinel. Shoot it and enjoy it. It is not anything unusual, except that as time passes, nice ones are getting harder to find.
