Whats this I hear about ruger making new production mini-14's and 30's so they won't accept high cap magazines???

Is this true, can anyone confirm this?

    This rumor has been thrown around since the assault weapons ban of 1989. I think we should give Ruger more credit than that. Unless they want to stop selling their rifle, they won't ever do that. It would mean retail suicide, if they did.

    Ruger did change the Mini-14 so a high cap mag of any brand will not fit the gun. The Mag well has been narrowed so they will not fit. I assure you I have seen this first hand. I also have spoken to Ruger about it, they did not tell me why they did it but it has just been done to new production rifles. You can call them at 603-865-2442. Another member called this number the other day and ask the same question,and was misinformed by a new employ. But I have talked to her since then and she is aware of the change. Please call Ruger at the number above. AS for the mini-30 there have been no change as Ruger told me they never made any factory High Capacity mags and they are all aftermarket mags so they did not change the Mini-30 Mag well. Please call Ruger and somebody get updated on the change I assure you I dont lie or make up malicious rumors.Neither am I going to give up my Ruger collection, for they still make good products. And there is one thing I forgot to tell you that Ruger told me, L.E. can still but the guns tat except hi caps. Hope this helps.

    You would figure what happened to Smith & Wesson would have taught them something.

    Rugster, how is it that they have changed the Mini 14 to not take anyone elses magazine yet they haven't changed their own? The magazines made from Ruger today are the same size as the ones made years ago. If the factory and aftermarket mags were interchangeable then, why would that be any different now? I must admit, I have not contacted Ruger, but that is because I have never seen anything other than minor tolerance differences over the years in regards to the mag fit on Ruger Mini 14's. That is nothing new, that has been the case over the last 20 years. I don't mean to question your credibility, but I find your information to be curious at best. This wouldn't be the first time that an employee at a manufacturer gave out misleading and/or just flat wrong information. I'm not from Missouri (the show me state), but I guess this one is something I'll have to see for myself. When did this supposed change-over take place? I have had new Mini 14's as of late and not encountered this supposed change in the mag well.

    I have over the years however, seen some of the aftermarket manufacturers screw up their magazines and do their spot welding in such a way that their mags wouldn't fit the Ruger rifle. It had absolutely nothing to do with Ruger intentionally changing their dimensions. It had to do with an aftermarket magazine maker screwing up while making the magazine. Perhaps that is what the people at Ruger were trying to say. Their magazine will fit, but "some" of the aftermarkets have been made too wide...

    I don't know, just a guess. Surely Ruger isn't stupid enough to cut their own throats.

    Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Ruger that didn't exactly protest the assault weapons ban just prior to it becoming a law? Maybe figuring the sale of their mini-14s would jump then? If my memory is correct that them contemplating changing their rifles to not accept high-cap magazines isn't beyond the realm of possibility.

    The answer to this question is simple just call Ruger, I wish I were just plain wrong. And Ive seen the new guns and spoke to Ruger twice about the matter to confirm it. It has been a big talk topic around here. But like I said Im not going to part with my collection, they were and still are fine firearms. Please give them a call be specific and ask them if they changed the guns thereselves not to accept Hi Caps only on the Mini-14 Im afraid you will be disappointed at what you here.The no. is 603-865-2442 Thanks for your interest.

    GreenLantern;
    I believe it was the Hi-Cap Pistol Mags that Ruger went along with willingly.

    I guess, I'll give them a call tomarrow. I'm going to call a couple of times and talk to different people, see if they give me the same story, or if they just don't know what they're talking about.
