How do you check the headspace on a semi-auto uzi carbine?

    I honestly don't know and since no one else answered yet, I'm just going to say this. If you question your gun's safe ability to fire, you may be wise to have a reliable gunsmtih check it out and ask him these questions.

    I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.

    Insure that the barrel is seated properly and the barrel nut is tightened down. These guns, unlike most guns were intended to have the barrels removed regularly for cleaning and then put back in again. There is reasonably little chance that you should be concerned with the headspace of an UZI unless it has been horribly mistreated. They are built to take quite a bit of abuse.

    This is how I was told it could be done, not sure if it's right, but it works. With the bolt closed remove the barrel nut and barrel. When sliding the barrel into the receiver it should just touch the bolt, you should see the bolt move or feel it. I had problems with light primer strikes and it turned out the barrel wasn't touching the bolt. If you have access to a machine shop some, very little can be milled off the flange on the barrel, the piece behind the barrel nut. I bought another barrel and functions fine.

    It's a 9mm by the way. It won't fire. Have discovered that with barrel installed and nut tight as it will go, you can pull barrel forward about quater inch it will turn. It comes forward enough so the two 180 degree slots, the one on the barrel and one on gun don't lock. The nut is not going down far enough to lock them. Could it be retaining nut catch?

    Barrel installed right. Have removed retaining nut catch, nut now screws down and locks barrel so it don't move. Now what, have catch machined or buy another one and see if it works correctly?

    Something doesn't sound right. I really think you should take it to a gunsmith.

    You may try another barrel? Another retainer nut?

    I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.

    Unlike lee,I doubt you are putting the barrel in "backwards"
    I am betting you are trying to put a barrel for the full auto Uzi in a semi gun.Won't work.
    Remember he posts nonsense just to see his name on here.

    Was the Uzi was working before you removed the barrel? If so try this. Remove the barrel nut and check for stripped threads. Clean the threads, lightly lubricate and reinstall barrel nut. You will probably need to press the barrel catch in to fully tighten the nut. You can remove the top cover and check to see that the breechblock is in proper contact with the barrel. If this doesn't work, do not cut or alter anything. Have the gun inspected by a gunsmith. Uzis are very stout, reliable guns and usually work well under the most adverse

    Got gun from local dealer, he got from someone on consignment who put kit and receiver together because gun would not work. I bought anyhow. I think problem is the barrel catch, it has spring behind BUT will NOT press all the way in. With catch removed barrel installs perfectly and nut screws down and locks perfectly.
