Just purchased a used Sako Forester Model 579, 308 Caliber. I was just wondering if anybody can tell me how old it is. The guy at the gun shop said that it was an older one, but damm it looks new!!! The serial number is in the 73000 range. The action is made in Finland. Any info would be appreciated.
The price was right so I decided to give it a home much to the wifes dismay!! Booger

I checked a Blue Book from 1998, and The Sako Forester model 579 is not listed. If I had more confidence in the Blue Book, I would be tempted to say it is likely post '97, and I suppose "one of the older ones," could mean 3 years old instead of 20, but I lack the confidence I wish I had in the Book. Perhaps Sako or maybe the importer could give you some help?

Ok hedog thanks for your input. I found one on this site item# 3910159 that has a serial number real close to mine. He claims it's an early model. I fired off an email to see if he could give me some info, ill let you know if I get a response.
Once again I love this site the knowledge on here is just unbelievable!

I have printed this out, and will check some other books tonight, and let you know if I come up with anything in a couple of days.

The L579 action is older production, prior to the adoption of the A-series actions. The question is whether your rifle is pre-1972 or not. What importer marks (if any) are on the rifle? Does it say 'Bofors Steel' on the barrel?

The original barrel was replaced with a shillen. All that is on the action is l579 no 735xx then a symbol that I can not recognize and the letters which appear to be mv. The symbol is about 1/8 square and appears to have two small points at the top, the floor plate has a picture etched in it of two bucks standing in the woods and the bottom of the trigger guard has four symbols thaat look like the feathers on an end of an arrow. The bolt is bent down and sweeps toward the back with a round knob with a knurled pattern about 1/8 wide around it's center.

Ah. I dont have my Sako reference handy, but I do believe that gun to be pre-72. Unfortunately, the barrel replacement killed the collector value.

Enjoy it as a shooter, though!

Pabooger, I found some information in Rifles of the World, not including a serialization. If you are interested I could mail you a photo copy. Post an e-mail address.
