Winchester mod 1890 Patent Date?

Information please? What is the patent date stamped on the Winchester model 1890 rifle barrel? This is a .22 cal pump action with a 24in octagon barrel. Do some of the later barrels have a second patent date of 1892? Thank you. Loftwinds.

I don't know the answer, but....this may help you: only an original barrel will have the Winchester "WP" proof stamped on it.

This is out of Ned Schwings book "Winchester's Slide Action Rifles".

The patent date June 26,1888 refers to the Browning patent that was sold to Winchester, and the date Dec 6,1892 refers to the take down feature patented by William Mason in that year. The next patent date seen is Nov 27,1906, this marked the advent of the external locking lugs. Or the model 3 reciever. The last patent date seen is May 30,1911 and that was for the reinforcing collar or lug on the end of the magazine.

The only model 1890s that didn't have at least some of these patent dates marked on them were the very early solid frame non take down models. If you run across one, DON'T let it go.[:p]

None of the early Winchester 22s were proofed until 1906, except some for export.

Neal... that is not an entirely true statement. Winchester did not begin to use the superposed "WP" in oval until 1901, and it did not become standard until late 1902. Also, one could order a replacement barrel from Winchester, and those were identically marked except for having just a "P" in an oval on the top of the barrel, and an "OF" stamped on the bottom of the barrel near the shank threads.
