Hey guy's I just bought a bunch of replacement parts for my SKS, and they're ALL completely coated in cosmoline I was wondering what the most effective way of removing it would be? I'm assuming something like acetone or paint thinner would do the job, but at the same time, I don't want to harm the metal, if I had a big jug of gun solvent I would just use that, unfortunately I only have a medium sized bottle of it. Anyways any advice or input would be greatly appreciated!

anybody know any good tricks to remove this stuff from a rifle and the stock without damaging the finish?

Use rubbing alcohol from Walmart. Do it outside, away from any source of open flame, as it's extremely flammable.

+1 for outside and no sparks. We used gasoline in the Army. Any good solvent and a nylon brush after a good soak in a covered can. Oil with gun oil after letting dry on newspaper out in the sun.

You CAN use solvens, such as Varsol, alcohol, mineral spirits, etc. Avoid gasoline unless you have a large paid up life insurance policy. You can also use simple green, 409, etc, and hot water.

What works best for me is Goop orange hand cleaner (see Dollar Tree). Squirt some on a throwaway brush (dollar store has cheap toothbrushes) scrub part, rinse under hot water, non-flammable and does not make house stink.

I had 20 sks to clean. Took them apart 5 at a time put each one in a 5 gal bucket of kerosene, let soak. Went from bucket to bucket.

I use the wife's mini steam cleaner, strips it right off. Anything that fits in a coffee can gets boiled.
