remmington 788 ejection problem

I have a remington 788 in 223 that will not eject the case everytime. Sometimes it throws it out fine 3 or 4 feet from the gun, sometimes it just does exit the action, most times it just flops around and ends up in the action and I have to turn the gun over so it will fall out. The ejector pin is not damaged and has a good amount of tension on it. Gun is a tack driver but this agravating trait takes some of the fun out of shooting it. Hoping someone has a clue to the cure. hi greg, i have had several of these in the shop over the years with this problem. the recess in the bolt face needs to be polished out a little. take the bolt out of the rifle and remove the ejector and spring, then try a fired case (one that gave you problems)in the extractor. you should be able to see where to polish.mike

I also had this problem with a 788 in 6mm. I fixed it by taking out the ejector and extending the ejector's relief cut-out for the retaining pin, which allowed the ejector more movement when the bolt was retracted, allowing it to fully eject the spent case. Just don't overdo the grinding to extend the relief. Good luck, DaveF.

I also had this problem on my wife's 7mm-08. Turned out the fired case was hitting the turret of the scope as it ejected and was bouncing right back into the ejection port. It happened so fast you couldn't even see it happen. Finally isolated the problem by removing the scope, then it ejected perfectly every time. I solved the problem by repositioning the scope and experimenting until the problem went away. Let us know how you solve the problem.

I worked on one a while back (.308) that had the same problem.The gun had been neglected and was very dirty and the chamber was rough. Gave it a good cleaning and polished the chamber, fixed the problem.
