BOSS or no BOSS

Recently acquired a nice, used WInchester Model 70 in .300 WinMag (stainless barrel, laminated stock) equipped with the BOSS device (muzzle brake + barrel "tuner") and would like to ask if anyone has experience with removing the BOSS & how this might affect accuracy. The concept seems well engineered but I find the additional variable involved in finding a "sweet spot" setting (testing for bullet weight & powder charge combos gets expensive in this caliber!) a bit too much.I suppose a workable option would be to fit a new barrel but would rather save that for a last resort barring another effective solution.

Spend the time and effort required to get the initial settings. Then record the settings on the boss for each of the loads you like to use. Then you won't go through the setup process every time you change rounds or loads. I'm sure you know that there will be slight changes in performance with weather, altitude, etc. so it won't be perfect no matter what you do. I would leave the boss intact until the barrel is shot out. RG
